Dr Kourkoulos is a multicultural, trilingual (Greek, English and Italian) surgeon, with significant NHS experience. He has spent 8 years working as a Consultant Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgeon in major Hospitals across the UK, and has in depth knowledge and understanding of working with patients of British nationality, who are accustomed to the services provided by the NHS.

Dr Kourkoulos holds the position of Director of Surgery in Mediterraneo Hospital of Athens. He specializes in Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. He has a specialist interest in Oesophagogastric Surgery, with subspecialty in Cancer of the Oesophagus and Stomach, Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease, Weight Loss Surgery and abdominal Wall Reconstruction

He has worked as a Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon in Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust between 2014 and 2020. In this position he completely reorganized the department of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, leading to the development of an Antireflux and Obesity Surgery Unit. At the same time, he worked as an Honorary Consultant in Bariatric Surgery in St George’s University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. During the entire period, he performed a large number of Bariatric procedures (mainly Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass), Gastric and Oesophageal Cancer (Oesophagectomy and Gastrectomy), as well as Antireflux (Fundoplication), Hiatal and Paraoesophageal Hernia procedures.

He specialized in Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy and Laparoscopic Antireflux and Hiatal-Paraoesophageal Hernia procedures from the position of Consultant Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgeon in Royal Devon and Exeter University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust between 2013 and 2014.

He trained in Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Surgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary-Central Manchester University Hospital, initially as a Fellow, and subsequently as a Consutant in Oesophagogastric Surgery, from 2012 to 2013.

Prior to moving to the UK, he completed his training in General Surgery, having worked for 6 years at Evaggelismos Regional Hospital of Athens, with a specialist interest in gastrooesophageal surgery, colorectal surgery, obesity surgery and laparoscopic surgery.

Dr Kourkoulos was born and raised in Rhodes, he got a Medical Degree and Masters Degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery from the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens. He has been awarded the title of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and he is a trainer of Laparoscopic Surgery and Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient at the same institution.
