Normal and pathological hair loss

Normal hair loss is a natural process of the body in which some hairs are lost daily due to the fact that the hair is recycled. About 100,000 to 150,000 hairs are located on the scalp. Normally 50-100 hairs fall out daily as the hair has three phases of life: the regenerated, the native and the telogen, during which the hair is replaced and grows back.

But there is also hair loss since more than 100 hairs fall out per day, some of which do not grow back. The fall is not constant and appears during different seasons. This hair loss is pathological and is called alopecia.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

The main causes of hair loss in both men and women are:

Heredity: Genes often determine whether you will have weak hair or hair loss. Women usually experience thinning hair on the top of the head, but rarely lose hair, despite men.

Hormonal disorders: It mainly affects women who often have hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, and have high levels of testosterone, which causes thinning hair. Symptoms of hormonal disorders also include acne, irregular menstruation and hair growth in areas where men grow hair.

Nutrition: Hair needs energy and nutrients, as hair follicle cells grow very fast. It is important that the diet is balanced and contains all the essential nutrients that the body and hair need. Lack of nutrients and especially B vitamins, zinc and iron can disrupt the hair cycle and cause premature inactivation of the follicles, resulting in excessive hair loss.

Stress: Stress affects hormones such as cortisol, which causes hair loss, resulting in more stress and eventually a vicious cycle. The good thing is that once you relax, your hair will return to normal.

Medications: Some medications, such as those used to treat acne and especially those containing retinol (vitamin A) can cause hair loss.

Other factors that exacerbate hair loss are:

  • Skin diseases
  • Infections
  • Use of chemical products
  • Exposure to extreme natural conditions
  • Air pollution, polluted water
  • Diabetes and cancer have also been identified as major causes of hair loss. Also, hair dyes, and inappropriate care and bath products can cause hair loss.

In women, hair loss can also be caused by pregnancy or menopause.

Hair loss occurs in both sexes, regardless of age, but the most common cause of male pattern baldness is heredity.

TYPES OF HAIR LOSS

Androgenetic Alopecia (baldness)

This type of hair loss occurs in men and women of all ages, usually between 20 and 50 years old. It gradually creates various dilutions on the head, usually in the front line. On the temples and on the upper part of the head to a degree where there is no hair growth at all.

It occurs more often and to a greater extent in men. It is mainly because of androgens on the hair follicles and in people with a genetic predisposition.

Diffuse  Alopecia

Hair loss is unstable and creates local dilutions of 1-5 cm, where the skin becomes smooth without any hair. In addition to the head, similar thinning can occur in various parts of the body.

Damage to the hair from the constant “treatment”

Girls and especially teenagers, instead of grooming their hair, they often make them suffer. Excessive washing, combing, straightening of the hair hair destroy the hair. Also, the frequent drying with hot air as well as the frequent changes in the hair style, especially if this presupposes stretching of the hair then leads to their destruction.

In Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group, the specialist team applies a range of treatments to combat hair loss. Each case is treated separately while a special diagnosis is made so that the appropriate treatment plan can be decided.
